Plenty of site owners know this situation. The website still works, technically, but it’s slow on phones, the design looks like 2016, and the bounce rate keeps creeping up. Nobody on the team really wants to touch it.<\/p>\n

So someone suggests tearing it all down and starting fresh. That sounds satisfying. In practice, rebuilds usually take far longer than planned and can tank search rankings if URLs change along the way.<\/p>\n

The good news? Most of the problems people blame on an “old site” can be fixed in place, one piece at a time.<\/p>\n

Figure Out What’s Actually Broken<\/h2>\n

Guessing gets expensive, so start with data. Run the homepage and a few key pages through Google’s PageSpeed Insights (it’s free and takes about a minute).<\/p>\n

The scores worth watching are Core Web Vitals. Google’s targets are a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Check the mobile results first, because they’re almost always worse than desktop.<\/p>\n

Then open Google Analytics 4 or Microsoft Clarity and look for the pages people abandon fastest. Clarity’s session recordings can be a little painful to watch, since they show real visitors rage-clicking buttons that don’t respond.<\/p>\n

On WordPress sites, the CMS usually isn’t the culprit. It’s the 30-odd plugins piled up over the years, plus a theme nobody’s updated since the day it was bought. Get the Speed Back<\/h2>\n

Images are almost always the worst offenders. A 2 MB hero photo converted to WebP or AVIF can often drop below 300 KB, and visitors won’t notice any loss in quality.<\/p>\n

Add a CDN if there isn’t one already. Cloudflare’s free plan is plenty for most small and mid-sized sites.<\/p>\n

Hosting matters more than people expect. A site still on PHP 7.4 (which stopped getting security updates back in 2022) should move to PHP 8.3 or newer, and a lot of hosts make that a dropdown change in the control panel.<\/p>\n

And speed affects more than patience. Google says in itsCore Web Vitals documentation<\/a> that its ranking systems use these metrics, so a faster site can help with search too.<\/p>\n

Update the Design Without Starting Over<\/h2>\n

A fresh font and more white space can make an old site look years younger. Both changes live in the stylesheet, so the templates can stay exactly as they are.<\/p>\n

Mobile deserves the most attention. Statcounter puts mobile at roughly 60% of global web traffic, and a surprising number of older sites still make those visitors pinch and zoom.<\/p>\n

If the layout isn’tresponsive<\/a> , it can usually be retrofitted one template at a time with flexible grids and CSS media queries. Do the homepage and top landing pages first; the rest can wait.<\/p>\n

Also, test on an actual budget Android phone. A shrunk-down desktop browser window isn’t the same thing, however close it looks.<\/p>\n

One warning: go easy on fancy scroll animations. They look great in a Figma prototype and then quietly wreck INP scores once they’re live.<\/p>\n

Accessibility Isn’t Optional Anymore<\/h2>\n

For businesses selling to EU customers, this stopped being a nice-to-have on June 28, 2025. That’s when the European Accessibility Act started applying to a wide range of digital products and services.<\/p>\n

The standard everyone points to is WCAG, and the W3C’sWCAG overview<\/a> explains what version 2.2 covers. Most common failures are pretty boring, like low-contrast text or images with no alt text.<\/p>\n

Free tools like WAVE and axe DevTools will catch a good chunk of these. They won’t find everything, though, so it’s still worth having someone try the site with a screen reader.<\/p>\n

Keep It From Getting Old Again<\/h2>\n

Sites don’t go stale overnight, and they don’t need fixing overnight either. A quick look at Core Web Vitals and analytics once a quarter is usually enough to spot trouble early.<\/p>\n

That upkeep keeps getting cheaper as AI tools take over grunt work like compressing images and finding unused CSS. Put in a few hours every few months, and the “should we just rebuild?” meeting might never need to happen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
