ScienceAlert is looking for a contract-based Weekend Editor to lead editorial on our site between 9am Friday and 5pm Sunday, US EST. The work across that period will be flexible, but will be on average 5 hours per day.

We believe science inspires a better world, and we are looking for an experienced digital editor to help us further our goal of making science news accessible to everyone, anytime.

The Weekend Editor is responsible for publishing articles on the ScienceAlert website during the weekend, along with monitoring analytics and our social media. In this multitasking role, you will be curating and publishing timely content from our syndication partners along with assigning and editing a handful of articles by our staff writers. You will be working alone most of the time or with limited support, so you need to be comfortable making sharp editorial decisions quickly and confidently, following your news sense and judgement.

Turning a news article into a complete package will be part of your role, which means you will be responsible for making sure the headline, image, social media packaging and embedded content are all optimised to help our articles reach a wide audience.

You will stay up to date with breaking news and trends in science, while upholding ScienceAlert’s editorial values at all times and keeping the needs of our readers in mind.

Requirements:

Minimum of two years’ experience working as a digital/online editor in a fast-paced environment, preferably with daily news
Willingness to work weekends with occasional flexible hours, including evenings
Wide understanding of science topics; a science background is preferable
Proven understanding of how to ‘sell’ an online news article to get maximum impact by crafting and optimising headlines, visuals, and other relevant details
Strong grammatical, writing, and copy-editing skills; a respect for fact-checking processes and a proven ability to uphold editorial values and style
A proven ability to track breaking news and understand how to frame it for a particular audience
Experience with content management systems and social media platforms
Experience with monitoring social media and maintaining a brand voice in all external communications
An understanding of digital analytics and the importance of traffic trends will be highly valued
This is a contract position every weekend for 11 weeks. The workflow will best suit someone on the US East Coast, but we are flexible with locations as long as you are willing to work in the time zone we require.

We all work remotely, but ScienceAlert is an Australian company. This role has the scope to become a permanent position.

ScienceAlert is committed to creating a diverse and equal opportunity company. We objectively review applications to help us find the most qualified candidate. We have extensive work/life balance and mental health policies in place. We don’t believe in unrewarded overtime or being busy for busy’s sake. We do high-quality work and we take care of ourselves.

To apply, email a cover letter and CV to jobs[at]sciencealert.com. Applications close 21 August 2020.
